Exploring Digital Preservation: Notes for Practice and Research

Sunday, May 20, 2007, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

In an increasingly digital world, institutions and individuals are facing the need to provide for the long-term care of electronic information, including publications, data sets, and geospatial materials.  This tutorial will provide an overview of the issues involved in digital preservation, and will draw upon the work of the Library of Congress National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP).  Speakers will engage participants on three main preservation topics of interest relating to digital government:

  1. Introduction to digital preservation concerns and current practices;
  2. Discussion of topics relevant to management of state and local government digital information; and
  3. Summary of issues and practices associated with the long-term care and accessibility of research data.

Participants will engage in practical exercises to frame preservation issues and understand the basic requirements for long-lived digital information.  A question and answer session will permit attendees to explore their specific needs.  Attendees will also receive a tailored bibliography with web links, as well as a packet of specialized publications and other materials.

The target audience includes researchers who need a fuller understanding about digital preservation, as well as others who have an interest in providing for the proper creation, management, stewardship, and ongoing use of digital information that documents or illustrates the work of government.
